New Season, New Start: Supporting Your Child as They Settle into Nursery

Toddler

September is often the beginning of new routines, new rhythms, and for many families, the start of nursery life.

If your little one has just started, you may find yourself navigating big emotions — theirs and yours! Some children settle quickly, while others need a little more time to feel secure. Both are completely normal.

Here are some ways to support your child as they find their feet in this new season.

Let's jump straight into Supporting Your Child as They Settle into Nursery!

1. Keep Routines Consistent at Home

Children feel safe when they know what to expect. Keeping to familiar routines at home — like bedtime, mealtimes, or a story before sleep — provides a sense of stability even as lots of other things feel new.

💡 Try this: Create a “getting ready for nursery” routine each morning — it could be putting on shoes, choosing a book for later, and a big goodbye hug.

2. Talk About Their Day

It’s common for children to answer “nothing” when you ask about their day. Instead, ask specific, playful questions like:

  • “What did you learn about today?”

  • “Who did you sit next to at snack time?”

  • “What made you smile today?”

💡 Why it helps: It keeps communication open, shows interest, and helps children reflect on their experiences.

3. Build Independence in Little Ways

Small skills at home support confidence at nursery. Encourage your child to zip their coat, pour water into a cup, or tidy up toys.

💡 Why it helps: These everyday moments give children a sense of achievement, which carries over into nursery life (and beyond!).

4. Create Calm and Consistent Goodbyes

Even after the first few weeks, drop-offs can be emotional. Keep your goodbye short, warm, and consistent: a hug, a smile, and a reminder that you’ll be back.

💡 Try this: Create a special but short and simple “goodbye routine” e.g. 2 kiss and bye, bye or a hug and a high five!

5. Comfort Through Familiarity

Let your child take a small comforter, soft toy, or family photo in their bag. These little links to home can be incredibly reassuring.

💡 Why it helps: Familiar objects help children feel safe and connected while they adjust to new surroundings.

6. Celebrate the Small Wins

Notice and celebrate progress, no matter how small. Whether it’s a tear-free drop-off, joining in a group song, or making a new friend — your encouragement makes them proud of themselves.

💡 Why it helps: Recognising little milestones boosts confidence and shows your child that their efforts are valued.

A Season of Growth

Settling into nursery isn’t always a straight path — some days will feel easier than others. But with consistency, patience, and lots of love, your child will begin to feel at home.
