Sun Safety for Under-5s: A Parent’s Guide to Protecting Little Ones This Summer

As the warmer months arrive, little ones are eager to get outdoors — whether it's for bug hunting, picnics in the park, or splashy water play.

While fresh air and sunshine are great for children's wellbeing, sun protection is essential, for under 5s and beyond!

Young children’s skin is far more sensitive than adults’, meaning they can burn quickly, even when it’s cloudy. According to the NHS, babies and toddlers should be kept well protected from the sun to avoid sunburn, heat rash, and overheating.

Here’s how to help your child enjoy the sunshine safely and confidently this spring and summer.

Babies Under 6 Months

  • Keep babies out of direct sunlight completely — especially between 11am and 3pm.

  • Use a sunshade or canopy on prams and buggies and choose shaded areas when out and about.

  • Dress your baby in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers their arms and legs, along with a soft cotton hat that shades their face and neck.

  • Sunscreen isn’t generally recommended for babies under 6 months, so shade and protective clothing are key.

Children Aged 6 Months to 5 Years

Sunscreen

  • Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ and 4-star UVA protection, suitable for children.

  • Apply generously 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply every 2 hours (or more often during water play).

  • Don’t forget spots like ears, neck, feet, and backs of knees.

Clothing & Accessories

  • Go for long sleeves and trousers in breathable fabrics like cotton.

  • Use wide-brimmed or neck-covering hats to protect little faces.

  • Child-sized UV-protective sunglasses can help protect developing eyes.

Shade

  • Plan outdoor play for before 11am or after 3pm, when the sun’s rays are less intense.

  • Take regular breaks in the shade, whether under trees, umbrellas, or canopies.

  • If shade is limited, create your own with pop-up tents or large muslins over buggies.

Hydration

  • Offer water often throughout the day — not just when your child says they're thirsty.

  • For babies, continue regular milk feeds.

  • Bring extra drinks when out and about, especially during active play.
